Pediatric NDT & SI Therapy Services

Susan McNutt OTR/L began building her private practice in 1990, working with Rosemary White initially while learning the basics of maintaining her own clinic.  The dream of establishing a clinic where therapy rooms would be adjacent to therapeutic animals and where a variety of modalities including hydrotherapy, hippotherapy and sensory integrative equipment would be available became a reality.  In 2001 the clinic out at Warm Rain Ranch was opened.  Since that time horses, cats, goats, and a variety of birds along with “fantastically furnished” therapy rooms, a hot tub and above ground swimming pools in two separate buildings have created a setting that puts clients at ease while offering therapeutic services to address the variety of needs of the children and their families. The animals and home-like setting invite children to participate, rather than trudging to yet another appointment.

"Warm Rain Ranch" is Pediatric NDT & SI Therapy Services, but "Ranch" refers to the animals that complete our family and assist the children in developing skills ranging from sensorimotor to communication and social interaction.

Pediatric NDT & SI Therapy Services is a private pediatric clinic located on a small farm in beautiful Bellingham Washington.  Initially started by Susan McNutt, OTR/L in Edmonds Washington in 1990, the practice began moving part time to Bellingham in 1993.  Since that time, Pediatric NDT & SI Therapy Services has expanded to a full time clinic including additional therapists, two clinic buildings on neighboring properties and many therapeutic animals to welcome children with a variety of needs and diagnoses.

We have added so many critters to our family and how fitting, some of them even have SPECIAL NEEDS!  We have experienced therapy horses in a variety of sizes, goats, chickens and huggable roosters (no, really, you can pick them up and love them!), ducks who are the joy of life on rainy days (since we have so many of those!), doves that coo and calm the nerves, colorful fish, and helpful kitties.

Everyone is loved and accepted here!

Therapeutic Animals

We have many animals to help us with our therapy, Horses, Goats, Cats,  and a  variety of  Birds.

Liam and Elloise joined our family last year. They are the cutest, playful, little goats!

Sensory challenged children are encouraged to pet the animals as it is a fun way to stimulate progress when touch and texture are difficult to overcome.

The excitement we all feel over critters is a great way to get past sensory boundries.

The expansion to The Annex has allowed us to have two areas for therapeutic riding, with poles, rings and basket ball to strengthen core muscles, move beyond midline, make postural adjustments, learn about body in space and many other therapeutic opportunities.  There are nearby trails and raspberry and blueberry fields where we are allowed to ride; we even get to sample some of the fruits and berries!  It is an all inclusive way to integrate the senses; processing  movement, taste, tactile, olfactory and auditory experiences while feeling empowered by the strength of  the horse!

Additions of above ground pools at both The Annex and the home office allow us the benefits of working in water while keeping the children cool and motivated on hot days.

Hippotherapy...

Horses are therapeutic in so many ways from stregthening core muscles and improving body-in-space awareness to encouraging interaction and focus of attention.  We ride in all sorts of weather from bundling up with cozies and rain slickers to dressing down with tank tops and shorts.   Hippotherapy is offered and available throughout the year depending on the children's weather preferences!

Hydrotherapy!

In the summer months Susan puts up the outdoor pools to both the central therapy site and The Annex.

Water works great when coaxing kids into therapeutic activites.  Motor planning, tolerance to tactile input, strengthening, respiration and breath control, flexibility and confidence are all things we can work on when climbing the ladder in and out of the pool, "swimming with style", fetching rings and other toys from the bottom, or moving around and over objects with direction from a therapist.
